Hello everybody! I'm an enthusiast Logicmail user and I just subscribed. I tried to register to the forum but it didn't seem to accept my subscription. I have a modest proposal for all developers: why not releasing a Logicmail version integrated with BB native email interface? This would probably be a very easy way to give users many other options like "add to contacts" and "search in messages". As I conceived it, this app version would work on the background (similarly to Shangmail if you know it, which actually has so many issues that turns out to be completely worthless… plus I don't like the idea of all my email going through unidentified servers). Many thanks to Derek K. and all developers! Claude |

There is no API for controlling the app, and there is currently no way to "auto-configure" the app like you suggest. If you have any ideas on how such a feature should be implemented, or would like to work on it, just let me know. Otherwise, you could create a custom build of the application with all of your configuration settings hard-coded. However, neither the app nor the build process was designed with this in-mind, so it won't be that easy. -- ---------------------------- Derek Konigsberg [1]dko...@lo... ---------------------------- On Mon, Mar 12, 2012, at 05:29 PM, Pingzhong Li wrote: I didn’t get any reply from the users mailing list. Since I don't have pretty pictures showing off features to accompany this report, I'll leave a blog post for another time. However, since I'm about to get really busy at my real job, I figured I should update you all on where things stand. We're actually pretty close, which is a good thing. There may seem to be a lot of open tickets, but most of them are gravy (that I likely don't have time to work on). Besides, the real goal of v2.1 is met by finishing everything described below. If anyone has ideas or comments on anything I'm proposing below, please speak up. I rarely get to discuss any of this with other developers, so I'm always open to ideas. -- Server polling (#79) and always-in-the-background features (#329) -- These are almost done. There is still plenty of testing that is necessary, and a few nit-picky use cases (e.g. account without saved username/password) to work through. The only major piece of development that is really still needed is code to handle the "improved connection availability" use case. This is the case where you are connected via the mobile network, and WiFi suddenly becomes available. My current thought is that I'll test for this case whenever the connection state is about to leave idle, and reconnect accordingly. What complicates this, however, is that WiFi may not actually be usable even if its available. Since I don't want to kill a working connection to attempt to make a non-working connection, I'll need some slightly interesting logic here. (I'm thinking of a "handover" process where I attempt to connect over WiFi, without logging in, before closing the non-WiFi connection, then "hand over" the new connection to be authenticated with. I'll obviously need lots of extra thresholds/checks to make sure that LogicMail doesn't spasm or get stuck during these cases.) -- Memory management for the object model (#212) -- I think I can make this one fairly simple, actually. Folder-level data isn't much of a concern, since its not very big. Its really only message content I'm worried about. So I'm thinking that I'll simply flush message content out of the object model (its hopefully cached on the SDCard) whenever a mailbox screen is closed. I might want to do a slightly more complicated implementation however, possibly with a background garbage collection process, so this flush isn't immediate. (If it was immediate, it could hurt performance or non-writable-filesystem device usability.) -- Configuration improvements -- There may still be more configuration items I need to add for the new features, especially in regards to folder polling (e.g. when to update the counts, versus what to trigger notifications from, etc). Also, the new user setup wizard needs to now include configuration of these new features. I know Adam has an update to the wizard that improves general usability (when he contributes the patch). Beyond that, I now need to also walk the user through the process of setting up polling/background operation. (Its currently all disabled by default, and needs to be manually configured.) -- Various UI touchups and nitpicks -- These are the (hopefully) easy low-priority items, some of which I really should do now, and some of which may get pushed to v2.2. Some have tickets, some don't. P.S. If anyone wants to meet me in person, I'm going to be at DevCon Americas 2011 in October giving a presentation on advanced BlackBerry unit testing with J2MEUnit and HammockMaker. -- ---------------------------- Derek Konigsberg dko...@lo... ---------------------------- |

Okay, this is my final (fingers crossed) message on this topic. I've just checked in my work so far, and here's what I've done: - Created two new "mail store" requests, containing 90% of the convoluted logic that used to be in the FolderRefreshHandler classes of the "services" layer: - ImapFolderRefreshRequest - PopFolderRefreshRequest - Cleaned up the "services" layer based on the knowledge that due to the above, complex folder refresh/sync operations are now single requests within the mail store. - Drastically simplified the multi-folder refresh logic to simply queue up a whole bunch of these refresh requests within the mail store. Hopefully I didn't break anything, but I'll continue to test-and-fix as I start running the code on my personal device. Eventually, if I get around to implementing IMAP's QRESYNC extension, it'll now be a lot easier. It'll just be an alternate refresh request implementation. (If I do that, IMAP folder refreshes will become significantly more efficient for servers that support it.) Due to these changes, users will hopefully notice the following: - Folder refreshes should now show a single updating status message (instead of 2-3 show/hides of the status bar). - Folder refreshes should be a little bit faster, due to a lot less round-tripping between layers of the app. P.S. Any further work on this will be cleanup, and not worth writing E-Mails about. -Derek On 08/11/2011 10:08 PM, Derek Konigsberg wrote: > I'm creating the more complex requests *inside* the mail store layer. > The services layer will still be responsible for cache loading (upfront) > and updates (by intercepting mail store events). Note: This is more developer-in-the-weeds stream-of-consciousness I just wanted to let you know that after a first pass at everything I rambled at in the last message, and a lot of thinking, I've come up with a much simpler and cleaner solution that I'm currently working through the implementation of. Basically, it occurred to me that the original reason for all the nastiness in the services layer was because of the v2.0 mail store request implementation. It really was nothing but a thin wrapper around mail protocol commands. Everything I proposed doing in my last ramble, and a few considered variations thereof, was just going to add to the complexity of it all by building more infrastructure in the wrong layer of the application. So here's what I'm actually working through now: I'm creating the more complex requests *inside* the mail store layer. The services layer will still be responsible for cache loading (upfront) and updates (by intercepting mail store events). However, the rest of the protocol-dependent processes are going to solely be the responsibility of the mail store layer. (So far, this actually improves performance as well, though it still needs a lot of testing before I can check it in.) I'll then be able to dramatically simply the code in FolderRequestHandler, and probably even remove its IMAP and POP specific subclasses. I may eventually simplify NetworkMailStoreServices as well. Hopefully, the only complicated thing I'll have to come up with a cleaner solution for, is chaining folder refresh operations together (or queuing operations after folder refreshes). However, given that these big operations are now singular requests according to the mail store, I may be able to remove the quirky "enable/disable IMAP idle" administrative operations around them. -Derek On 08/09/2011 10:16 PM, Derek Konigsberg wrote: > If you don't want the back-story, feel free to skip to the mark. :-) > Oh, and sorry for the endless rambling here. If you don't want the back-story, feel free to skip to the mark. :-) Oh, and sorry for the endless rambling here. Just want to keep people somewhat informed, given that I know the code is being reused downstream. Ever since the 2.0 code started coming together about a year ago, I've been trying to figure out where to hide all the ugliness between the asynchronous request-based mail store layer of the application and the data model layer. The ugliness I'm referring to, is the code that breaks a high-level data model request (e.g. "load/refresh this message") into a collection of cache and mail store operations. Initially, this was scattered throughout the data model classes (e.g. MessageNode, MailboxNode, etc.) and was getting out of control. After much head-banging, I solved the problem by creating a "services layer" in the data model package, to act as a facade between the rest of the data model and the mail store. Within it, I was able to localize all of this nasty code. (This layer is composed primarily of "MailStoreServices", "FolderRequestHandler", and their sub-classes.) In the 2.0 code, this still appears overcomplicated because the mail store requests are not really object-oriented. (This lead to a mess of trying to match requests with conceptually-request-independent mail store events, since the request success/failure callbacks didn't provide much information.) The first major change I did in the 2.1 (trunk) code, was to completely refactor the mail store requests to be fully object-oriented. This is somewhat obvious due to the massive increase in the number of classes in the "mail" package. Due to this, I was able to change the mail store services layer to follow a pattern where it only cares about the now-useful request callbacks when managing complex operations. (mail store events are directly passed through, and just looked at for cache updates) -->MARK The actual mail complex mail store services requests (e.g. "load a message", "refresh a folder", "refresh a collection of folders", etc.) are still very ugly-looking in their implementation. While I've cleaned it up a lot (see above), there are still many cases where it is getting messy again. This is especially true with multiple-folder refresh (i.e. "check all my mail folders in the background, every 10 minutes, and notify on new messages"). It also seems like bugs are starting to creep back into these cases. (Seen a sporadic mailbox-goes-blank when background-refresh is enabled, and flag changes during message load also causes issues.) I really just need to clean up these process flows so bugs can't creep in from unexpected events. Each one of these operations can be represented kind of like a state machine, and I should eventually be able to document them as such also. So what I'm going to be doing, is gradually refactoring these complex services operations into something resembling the Java state pattern. I started tonight, with the basic message loading process (which is anything but basic). Once I achieve a sufficient level of stability in my implementation, I'll start committing code. Most likely, this will involve some variation of the following classes inside the "model" package: ServicesRequestContext - context/control class ServicesRequestState - interface all state objects implement ServicesMailStoreRequestState - customized abstract state object designed to wrap mail store requests I'll then create subclasses of ServicesRequestContext for each complex operation. Of course this may change as I work through the implementation, especially if I start working towards using a hierarchical state machine for things like multiple-folder-refresh (where I want to disable/enable IMAP IDLE on either end). -- ---------------------------- Derek Konigsberg dko...@lo... ---------------------------- |

Hi dear developers, I use logicmail 2.1.0.38(dev) all the time and really love it. I also use tiggit mail. I have a few feature request to logicmail: - Have controllable preload size Logicmail doesn't preload email contents. So I have to wait to see email till it finishes download. Tiggit can preload. - Led alert for new emails I setup in profile but it doesn't work. - Support Chinese emails My OS is Japanese OS6. Logicmail can display Japanese emails correctly but not Chinese emails. Chinese emails are showing ???. Tiggit mail can display correctly. The one comes first is more important to me. Many thanks. -- Regards, Luchuan |

Wes -----Original Message----- From: Derek Konigsberg [mailto:dko...@lo...] Sent: Friday, July 15, 2011 9:21 PM To: log...@li... Subject: [Logicmail-devel] Progress report - 2011-07-15 This progress report is probably not something I want to make a big blog post about so far, but anyone working with the code should probably know about it. As some of you may know, I'll be giving a presentation at the BlackBerry Developer's Conference in San Francisco in October. For my actual presentation, RIM finally finished giving me the necessary resources and deadlines this evening. Of course they don't like to actually give you a deadline until its right around the corner. Right now, I need to have my draft submitted by July 22nd and the final presentation by August 12th. (If they extend it, they'll wait until I've already rushed to meet the current deadline.) So, I plan to be dedicating almost all of my spare time (that would otherwise go to LogicMail) to this over the next week or two. Okay, I think the more important thing for everyone to know is what I've done since that last big blog post from last weekend. I just committed code to give the application the ability to auto-start on device boot, and to prevent it from always wanting to exit when the user closes the app's home screen. The auto-start feature itself is a configuration option, and disabled by default (like all the nice 2.1 features, until we fully test them and integrate them into the setup wizard). The home screen close action now simply backgrounds the app. The "exit" option on the menu will still cause the app to quit. At a code-level, here's what I did: I completely refactored the code in LogicMail.java (the main class of the application), which handles app startup, to make it far more readable. I then added a new singleton container object (LogicMailRuntimeState) to manage all application state that is kept within the runtime store. (It was previously just a hashtable of notification sources.) The application's autostart entry point previously just fixed icons, registered notification sources, and exited. Now, if auto-start is configured by the user, it doesn't exit. Instead, it will completely start the application in the background, and put a reference to the UiApplication instance in the runtime store container I mentioned above. The application's normal entry point now acts a little differently as well. It first checks the runtime store container for an existing instance, and simply foregrounds it if one exists. If one does not exist, then it starts the application just like it always used to do. In implementing this, there was one problem of note that I had to work around: The autostart entry point executes before all the device's filesystems (e.g. SDCard) are mounted. I had to fix some issues so that LogicMail could handle this case. (Filesystems are only used for local folders and message content cache, so the app can work fine without them. I also already handled filesystems disappearing/reappearing while the app was running, so a lot of the work for this was already done.) (I also discovered an ordering-related bug with folder cache loading, that didn't manifest under any conditions but auto-start folder refresh, check the commit log for details.) Okay, so where are we now? I still need to make sure all of this works on a real device. I also still need to test behavior during desktop manager synchronization, since I now need to expect the app to actually be running during this as a more common use case. I hope that all made sense :-) -- ---------------------------- Derek Konigsberg dko...@lo... ---------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ AppSumo Presents a FREE Video for the SourceForge Community by Eric Ries, the creator of the Lean Startup Methodology on "Lean Startup Secrets Revealed." I also still need to test behavior during desktop manager synchronization, since I now need to expect the app to actually be running during this as a more common use case. I hope that all made sense :-) -- ---------------------------- Derek Konigsberg dko...@lo... ---------------------------- |

For those of you daring enough to be running the recent batch of builds, I'd just like to let you know that I think I've fixed the strange showstopper bugs that cropped up in them. Basically, two things happened... 1) I merged in a lot of changes recently made to 2.0, exposing a lurking issue in the mail-seen flag setting code. 2) I added support for special mail store events to prevent LogicMail from entering IMAP IDLE mode in the middle of the folder refresh sequence. Introducing these caused all sorts of havoc with the states of the mail connection handler. As of this early morning hour, I think I've managed to fix these, and the app is working again. I've also started integrating application analytics, as I'll continue to document here: http://www.logicmail.org/wiki/analytics This is just a short update to keep everyone in-the-loop. Now that I know that people are working with the code downstream, I'll make more of an effort to post to this list regularly. -- ---------------------------- Derek Konigsberg dko...@lo... ---------------------------- |

Sorry it took me so long to respond. This is likely a very simple fix, and anything to reduce roundtrips is a good thing. I've converted your last e-mail into a ticket accordingly: http://www.logicmail.org/ticket/316 On 04/13/2011 12:40 PM, Ken Murchison wrote: > LogicMail 2.x treats SMTP AUTH using PLAIN and LOGIN the same, in that > it only sends a response when challenged by the server. LogicMail 2.x treats SMTP AUTH using PLAIN and LOGIN the same, in that it only sends a response when challenged by the server. In the case of PLAIN, this results in an unnecessary roundtrip. SMTP AUTH with PLAIN allows an initial response to be sent as an optional argument to the command: AUTH PLAIN <Base64 credentials> 235 2.0.0 OK Authenticated as opposed to: AUTH PLAIN 334 <Base64 credentials> 235 2.0.0 OK Authenticated -- Kenneth Murchison Principle Systems Software Engineer Carnegie Mellon University |

To debug this further, I'd need information a little more representative of what LogicMail is actually processing and/or the error that is actually being generated. What that means, is I'd like to see three things: 1. The actual IMAP transcript between LogicMail and the mail server when the error occurs, or at least the responses to the same exact IMAP commands LogicMail is sending. If you can get this in a byte-accurate form, through a packet sniffer, that would be even more useful. (I think the command it uses to fetch body sections is like "UID FETCH 3 (BODY[1])" ) 2. The raw source of the message (IMAP can return this with "FETCH 3 (RFC822)" 3. Any exceptions logged to the BlackBerry event logger* * After you get the "Unknown error" pop-up, immediately press the red end-call button to go to your BlackBerry's home screen, then press "Alt lglg" (hold down Alt while typing the other four letters) to bring up the event log viewer. Look for any exception messages that may be there, which may be in bold. If you're lucky, there may even be a stack trace. Right in the middle of the "Downloading" section of the project website, under the bullet for "Latest release: 2.0.0-Beta". There is an item called "Pre-release branch automated builds", with a sub-item called "Over-The-Air installation". It contains a number of links (one for each support BB OS version under the following path: http://www.logicprobe.org/builds/logicmail-2.0/latest/2.0.0/ I also updated the simple OTA page, but I won't always update it every single time the build server runs. -Derek On 01/15/2011 01:49 PM, Gopal Kamalanathan wrote: > Derek, > > Thanks for the quick fix. Derek, Thanks for the quick fix. I am not able to figure out the location of the latest pre-prelease branch build. Can you send the link. If you can update the OTA page I will appreciate it. It is much easier and only way I know to install. I was able to reproduce the issue by faking the behavior of your IMAP server, and wrote this ticket: http://www.logicprobe.org/proj/logicmail/ticket/274 I also checked in a fix for it, which should be in the latest pre-release branch build. (Links are on the main project web page, separated by BlackBerry OS version.) The official mobile-friendly OTA-download page is only updated occasionally, and is a more manual process. -Derek On 01/14/2011 07:24 PM, Gopal Kamalanathan wrote: > Yeah, it is a server that I develop/maintain. > > Gopal > > > On 1/14/11 4:18 PM, "Derek Konigsberg"<dko...@lo...> wrote: > >> So its a server you're developing (or maintaining), not one you just are >> accessing? >> >> Returning a delimiter character in the LIST (and LSUB) response will >> probably make LogicMail 2.0 start working.
