yes, File::Spec was installed by default.  However, PPM wanted to install it
anyway.  I'm not sure how exactly ppm decides what it needs to install.
But, once I installed the File-Spec, all was well in the world.

if i'm the only person having this issue, then perhaps it's something weird
about my setup... or my uninstall/reinstall...

maybe the archive of this email will be sufficient... dunno....

Sorry for the slow response -- trying to catch up ...

I'm surprised File::Spec isn't available, it should be a core module. 
Does 5.8.2 come without?
