Yeah, the optimizer part took some time to Grok.
I hope that the code and the comments will take you thru the hard parts,
let me know if otherwize.

Does that mean youve run make, make test ?  or run perftests/timeit.sh ?

And looking at my post, and at the moderator-approval message,
I see that the attachment didnt make it, was too big.

heres a repeat - this time with a couple test outputs deleted before 
re-tarring,
its now 1/3 the size.  there are 2 test outputs left, 
{t,perftests}/test-coverage.t*,
cuz theyre small and interesting to inspect.
