[log4perl-devel] Altering of logfile from configuration in runtime.

Hello,

I tried to search the mail list archives but they are
down on sourceforge. (Standard Disclaimer...)

I am trying to update a logfile from the configuration
file at run time. I would really like to get the
current appender then alter the logfile name with out
completly creating a new appender. I want to use the
configuration file so that ops people can control most
of the behavior of the app. Is this possible? Am I
being clear?

If you're loading the config file with init_and_watch(), you could 
simply adapt the file appender's logfile setting in the config file and 
have L4P reload the configuration, either via polling or a signal. Make 
sure you're using autoflush, though, otherwise you might lose messages 
not flushed yet at re-init time.

Another way of accomplishing the same thing would be adding a signal 
handler to your application, and using the switch_file method of the 
file appender, take the test case in t/026FileApp.t as an example.

Ahh... This is what I want to do. Change the logfile
in the appender at runtime to add an extra application
dependent option. Using the switch_file method worked
just fine. (actually it's file_switch). The one
problem I had was I was using Log::Dispatch::File
instead of Log::Log4perl::Appender::File. Once I
switched that the code from the test worked great. 

I still have one problem. How do I ask the
Log::Log4perl::Appender::File for the current filename
(without using the object's 'filename' attribute.)? I
can patch Appender::File to add a get filename method.
But is there something I'm missing? What do you think?

Sorry, you're certainly correct, glad it works now!

For now, using the 'filename' attribute is your best option, I've 
applied the necessary changes for 0.44 to add a filename() method to 
L4P::Appender::File -- thanks!
