After talking more with the ASF team that owns logging.apache.org, it seems as tho licensing issues will prevent integration. Specifically, the Logging Services at ASF requires that software be licensed with the Apache Software License or ASL-compatible license. At this time, it is unclear whether GPL is compatible. (GNU has declared it incompatible, but the ASF team is discussing it with GNU team since the interpretation is uncertain.) Moreover, the Apache Software Foundation does not allow double-licensing which Log4Perl currently has (Artistic License and GPL). I've asked them to put a link to the Log4Perl homepage on the http://logging.apache.org site, and they have agreed. Mike and Kevin, if you are willing or interested in changing the license terms, please let me know. Otherwise, we'll just keep pace with the logging services on an unofficial basis. dave -----Original Message----- From: Viner, David [mailto:dv...@ya...] Sent: Monday, March 29, 2004 10:14 AM To: Log4perl-Devel (log...@li...) Hi, I noticed in reading about log4j that it exposes slightly different method names than log4perl. for example, log4perl: is_debug() log4j: isDebugEnabled() log4perl: is_info() log4j: isInfoEnabled() log4perl: is_warn() log4j: _none_ log4perl: is_error() log4j: _none_ log4perl: is_fatal() log4j: _none_ Any thought of adding these interfaces? Also, we should look into how to get log4perl listed and linked to on http://logging.apache.org/ Thoughts? dave |

Hello Mike, Thanks for the response. > Another way of accomplishing the same thing would be > adding a signal > handler to your application, and using the > switch_file method of the > file appender, take the test case in t/026FileApp.t > as an example. Ahh... This is what I want to do. Change the logfile in the appender at runtime to add an extra application dependent option. Using the switch_file method worked just fine. (actually it's file_switch). The one problem I had was I was using Log::Dispatch::File instead of Log::Log4perl::Appender::File. Once I switched that the code from the test worked great. I still have one problem. How do I ask the Log::Log4perl::Appender::File for the current filename (without using the object's 'filename' attribute.)? I can patch Appender::File to add a get filename method. But is there something I'm missing? What do you think? Thanks for your help, Lee __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! If you're loading the config file with init_and_watch(), you could simply adapt the file appender's logfile setting in the config file and have L4P reload the configuration, either via polling or a signal. Make sure you're using autoflush, though, otherwise you might lose messages not flushed yet at re-init time. Another way of accomplishing the same thing would be adding a signal handler to your application, and using the switch_file method of the file appender, take the test case in t/026FileApp.t as an example. -- -- Mike Mike Schilli m...@pe... |

Hello, I tried to search the mail list archives but they are down on sourceforge. (Standard Disclaimer...) I am trying to update a logfile from the configuration file at run time. I would really like to get the current appender then alter the logfile name with out completly creating a new appender. I want to use the configuration file so that ops people can control most of the behavior of the app. Is this possible? Am I being clear? Thanks, Lee __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Hi all, Log::Log4perl 0.43 has just been released, here's what's new: 0.43 (03/22/2004) * (ms) Applied patch by Markus Peter <wa...@sp...> for 'pipe' mode in Log::Log4perl::Appender::File * (ms) Added composite appender Log::Log4perl::Appender::Limit to limit message delivery to adjustable time windows. * (ms) Fixed last 033UsrCspec.t test case to run on Win32 as well (path fixed). * (ms) Lars Thegler <la...@th...> provided a patch to keep compatibility with 5.005_03. If all is OK, it'll hit CPAN in a couple of days. Enjoy! -- -- Mike Mike Schilli m...@pe... |

Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone has used Log4Perl in conjunction with the Nagios monitoring system (http://www.nagios.org). I think it would just take a new Log::Dispatch class which sent to Nagios "passive check results" (Nagios lingo). Before I wander off and try to write something, I'm wondering if somebody out there has already done so. thanks dave |

Recently, I stumbled across an article in Sysadmin Magazine (march issue) on "Logsurfer" -- it allows for specifying all kinds of trigger conditions on existing logfiles: If a certain number of messages are received, or even if there wasn't a message for a given timeframe: http://www.cert.dfn.de/eng/logsurf/ http://www.cert.dfn.de/eng/logsurf/logsurfer.conf.4.man I've been thinking about maybe adding that kind of functionality to Limit, to have this kind of control even before the messages are being written. -- -- Mike Mike Schilli m...@pe... |

Do I have to add get_logger to every method and sub or is there a more general way of handling it. With get and set methods the logging is most of the code. |

Hi, Working with Log::Log4perl version 0.42, I found a couple of small problems in test cases running under perl 5.005_03. Patches that fix these nits are attached. Both patches have been tested under a new perl (5.8.2), and work fine here as well. I should mention, that I maintain the port of Log::Log4perl in the FreeBSD ports tree. As such I have a vested interest in keeping the module working under 5.005_03 as far as it goes. Perl 5.005_03 is still the version distributed with stock FreeBSD 4.x (don't ask - I'm not especially fond of it either). /Lars |

These sunrays :). I'm glad it works -- changing the behaviour for multiple perl versions would have been quite a challenge. If you see any odd behaviour, let us know please ... Which version of perl are you using? i'm using Perl 5.8.1 on Fedora Core 1. i've tried this test again on known-good UTF-8 after reverting my changes to Screen.pm, and the problem seems to have disappeared, so i suspect malformed UTF-8 character sequences in my test data (possible, as I was copying and pasting the words) or sunrays bouncing off the memory chips. as a matter of interest, i've attached my test script and the file containing the UTF-8 bytes. sorry about the false alarm, still getting used to this Perl UTF-8 support :) regards, leon |
