I'm getting these errors from Log4perl using SPOPS  in my apache
errorlog:

Use of uninitialized value in subroutine entry at
/usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.1/Log/Log4perl/Logger.pm line 690
during global destruction.
          (in cleanup) Undefined subroutine &main:: called at
/usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.1/Log/Log4perl/Logger.pm line 690
during global destruction.

Are you familiar with this problem?

I would like to use logwarn() and logdie() for errors that have
nothing to do with the source file and line.  The warn() and die()
operators honor a trailing newline on the message -- if it's there
they don't append source file and line.  The logwarn() and logdie()
methods should do likewise.

PS: Neat module.  A little overdesigned maybe, but I suppose you have
    to include all the weird crap from Java land.

     * (ms) Added suggestion by Hutton Davidson <Dav...@ft...>
            to make the socket appender more forgiving. New option
            "silent_recovery" will silently ignore errors and recover
            if possible on initiallly dead socket connections.
     * (ms) Fixed bug with initialized() -- checking once caused
            subsequent calls to return true.
     * (ms) run t/045Composite.t only if Storable is installed -- earlier
            perl versions (like 5.6.1) don't have it by default.
     * (ms) fixed test case in t/020Easy.t for buggy perl 5.6.1
     * (ms) added Log::Log4perl::infiltrate_lwp() to make LWP::UserAgent
            play in the L4p framework upon request.
     * (ms) perl 5.00503 mysteriously core dumps in t/017Watch.t, seems 
like
            this was introduced in 0.46. Disabled these tests for now
            if we're on 5.00503 to avoid installation hickups. Longer term,
            need to investigate.

Any issues, please let me know before it goes to CPAN.

I've added it to 0.47. Use "silent_recovery" => 1 on the appender 
definition to activate this mode, default behaviour is unchanged for 
backwards compatibility, details on the Log::Log4perl::Appender::Socket

finding out how to indent log messages, based on the caller level, check

My major concern is that it will be hard to predict Log4perl's behaviour 
if N configurations are applied subsequently, overwriting each other's 
settings. If we could work out a simple and sound strategy, that'd be a

Hmmm, the procs are a mixture, some of the same, some different...I'd
considered this, but it would prove too cumbersome.

Hi Mike,
you're correct, currently, Log::Log4perl supports exactly one 
configuration file. We've been thinking about adding multiple "Log4perl 
Repositories", but that's not going to be available in the short run -- 
it's quite hard to get it right, defining what is capable of overriding 
what and what happens to the overridden.

Wondering if it is possible to init_and_watch multiple configuration
files...?  I've taken a look around at the modules, and it doesn't appear to
be possible...just wanted confirmation.

If it isn't possible, do you think this would be a useful feature?

What I'd like:
I have 600 processes running throughout the day.  At any one time there
could be, say, 100 running at the same time.  I want to be able to have one
central configuration file that is init_and_watch'd by all processes by
default.  In addition, I'd like to have a process-specific config file (also
init_and_watched) that could define the same config setup, overriding the
central config, or new configuration allowing me to log to a new
file/whatever.

What I'm trying to acheive:
If i'm trying to debug one particular process, out of the 100 processes
running, I'd like to be able to modify the process-specific config file, to
increase the debug level, and reap the benefits of init_and_watch.
Obviously I can do this with the central config file, but then all 100 procs
would start logging debug info.

Is this clear?  Any feed back would be much appreciated!

The current Log4Perl Socket appender code dies if the appender cannot
initially connect to the target listener.
The behavoir of the Log4j Socket appender is somewhat more forgiving. If
the target listener is not available,
one warning message is issued and a retry thread is started in the
background. Until the listener becomes available, log events are silently
discarded. When the listener becomes available, subsequent log events are
successfully sent to the listener.

I propose the current Log4perl Socket appender be changed to more closely
mimic the Log4j logic.
If the initial socket connection fails, a single warning should be issued.
If any attempt to log an event to the socket appender fails, a reconnect
should silently be tried.
If the reconnect fails, the log event should be silently discarded.

This behavior allows the socket appender to send messages when the listener
is available,
but discard them when the listener is down.

We advise against using init() in constructors. Init() should be called 
once (and only once) in the main program. And there's only one L4p 
configuration within a process.
