This is just a quick email to let people know that we've moved software development over to Github [1], and there is now a new Library of Congress discussion list for talking about the Chronicling America website and software [2]. The reasons for both moves were largely that SourceForge was really constraining our ability to develop the chronam software as an opensource project, and the SourceForge mailing list and issue tracker were not actively monitored. Hopefully both situations will be improved by the move. You can expect the SourceForge resources to be available for some time, but they will be marked as unactive. Please join us over on Github and the new discussion list! Happy holidays, //Ed [1] https://github.com/LibraryOfCongress/chronam [2] http://listserv.loc.gov/archives/chronam-users.html |

I apologize for not seeing this question until now. Karen and Michael are right, the AMI image is no longer available since it was on my personal AWS account for the hackathon at code4lib a few years ago. I just updated the wiki page to flag this [1]. I hope this is something we can talk about at the meeting. //Ed [1] https://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/loc-ndnp/wiki/ec2 |

The AMI was on a personal account, so it is no longer available. We are meeting next week for the National Digital Newspaper Program, and I hope to get some software updates. The University of Oregon is willing to supply and maintain an AMI for the LC Newspaper Viewer. We are just waiting to make sure we have the latest version. We're also willing to help if you have any questions during install. Just FYI, we are in the process of migrating the chronam code to Git from Mercurial. We use Git a lot more on other projects at LC, and there is the hope that we can move the chronam code over to Github, which should make it easier to track issues, code, etc in a more collaborative fashion. This is my way of apologizing (again) for not seeing your issue sooner, and for taking so long to resolve it. //Ed |

I noticed on the web site for the mailing list that my message got garbled so I am resending as a non-html email. I am still having issues with the installation. Anyone around? Thanks, Mike ---- I have been having problems installing ndnp on an amazon Ubuntu 10.4 EC2 instance. I was able to follow the instructions all of the way through. One change was needed: "sudo apt-get update" is needed before installing all of the system dependencies. Near the end of the process I ran across one issue: (chronam)ubuntu@domU-12-31-39-09-3D-8E:/opt/chronam/data$ django-admin.py chronam_sync --settings=chronam_settings Installed 87 object(s) from 1 fixture(s) Installed 4046 object(s) from 1 fixture(s) Installed 338 object(s) from 1 fixture(s) Installed 119 object(s) from 1 fixture(s) Installed 327 object(s) from 1 fixture(s) INFO:chronam.core.management.commands.chronam_sync:loading place links ERROR:chronam.core.management.commands.chronam_sync:Place matching query does not exist. This list seems to be focused mainly on local installs, so apologies if the following is off-topic. I'm using the Chronicling America API to download JSON results for a particular search term into a local database, which I'm then using as the basis for some visualizations, including maps of the number of pages for that search term by the state of the publication over a specified range of years. I'd like to be able to normalize the number of pages in the search result for each state (which I'm generating from the local database) by the total number of pages for that state in a given year range. This would be easy to do if the API offered a filter-by-state argument -- I could then just extract the total number of pages from the first page of the JSON result for a null search term (i.e., everything) in that date range for each state. But I can't find a way to filter by state using the API, even though it's easy through the CA web interface. I'd be grateful for any tips on how to do this via the API, if it is indeed possible. If not, maybe a feature to add? Etienne Benson |

Unfortunately this is an area where the opensource Chronicling America project is a bit under-documented, since you are the first person to try it :-( At LC we use the Essay Editor [1] to manage the essay content. It is a pretty simple Django app that allows people to create, edit and "publish" essays. The Essay Editor provides an Atom Feed that points at URLs for essays that have been published. Chronicling America's essay loader [2] uses the ESSAYS_FEED setting to figure out where to load the published essays from. Right now we have an instance of the Essay Editor running behind the firewall at LC, which staff use to manage the essays as they come in (mostly via email). The plan was always to eventually make an instance of the Essay Editor publicly available. This would allow awardees to log in and create essays, where they could then be reviewed by NEH, and loaded into Chronicling America. But since the app requires authentication to track who is who, it is non-trivial to make available from LC. So before I get any further, help me understand what you are trying to do. Do you want to create new essays and load them into your instance of Chronam? Do you want to load the 6 existing essays [3] you've already given to LC? //Ed [1] http://loc-ndnp.hg.sourceforge.net/hgweb/loc-ndnp/ndnp-essays/ [2] http://loc-ndnp.hg.sourceforge.net/hgweb/loc-ndnp/chronam-core/file/e839e18c41c6/chronam/core/management/commands/load_essays.py [3] http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/awardees/oru/ |

Any tips on loading essays into the app? I have the HTML format that Ivey sent me previously to put the essays in, but that's it, and I'm a little unsure how it all connects. Thanks very much for the info, glad you find the feedback useful. I actually have a number of projects involving historic newspapers, and have been making do with a number of jury-rigged solutions to presenting them online. One example that's pretty far along is a radical campus newspaper from the 1960s. I'm presently using Google's web-based PDF Viewer, combined with a custom site search, to provide a poor-man's repository. Here's a glimpse of the site as it stands now: http://www.msupaper.org/ On the Apache issue, I only meant that the output of both a2enmod and a2ensite tells the user to restart apache. It's actually important to not do that till the instructions tell you to, as they do on line 87. So not a problem the instructions themselves, only a risk that a user might obey the output of these apache commands, rather than waiting till line 87 to restart the daemon. I do have one question a little further along -- when I execute this command: $ django-admin.py chronam_sync --settings=chronam_settings ... I get the following errors: ---------------------- Installed 87 object(s) from 1 fixture(s) Installed 4046 object(s) from 1 fixture(s) Installed 338 object(s) from 1 fixture(s) Installed 119 object(s) from 1 fixture(s) Installed 327 object(s) from 1 fixture(s) INFO:chronam.core.management.commands.chronam_sync:loading place links ERROR:chronam.core.management.commands.chronam_sync:Place matching query does not exist. Hi Peter, thanks very much for sending your detailed notes about the INSTALL.ubuntu On Sat, Apr 9, 2011 at 6:19 PM, Peter Leonard <ple...@gm...> wrote: > Though the console will tell you this, it might make sense to put in > an explicit instruction to edit /etc/default/jetty and change NO_START > to 0 (how's that for a double negative?). I only see one apache restart on line 87. Should that be somewhere else? > First, a problem in the NativeImaging tarball. This seems to be some artifact Github serving up the tarball with Content-Type: application/octet-stream. I'm not sure it matters too much since pip is able to unpack it just fine. > Second, a problem in PIL. Pip says "WARNING: '' not a valid pagage > name, please use only .-separated package names in setup.py." This warning is related to PIL and not our code per-se. It doesn't prevent successful installation so I'm not going to open a ticket w/ them ... but if you feel strongly about it please feel free (http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/image-sig) > Third, NativeImaging needs jpeg2000 header support for _aware. I've ensured I have the > current version of libjpeg-dev, which apt-get resolves to > libjpeg62-dev, I believe. But apparently header files aren't included > with that release. Unfortunately we are not able to distribute the aware libraries since they are proprietary software (http://www.aware.com/imaging/jpeg2000.htm). The NativeImaging software is a wrapper for Aware and GraphicsMagick. The install should succeed as long as GraphicsMagick or Aware are available. I see that graphicsmagick isn't mentioned in the INSTALL.ubuntu though ... At the moment the open source release defaults to USE_TIFF = True, which means that it will use PIL (not NativeImaging) to load the TIFF instead of trying to work with the JP2. At our coding spring in February we decided that a good way to move forward would be to convert the TIFF to a high-resolution JPG in the open source release, since that provides speedier image render times, and doesn't require proprietary software. > Perhaps tell people here how large the data will be that wget is > fetching? Could there be a > smaller data set (one issue?) for a unit test? Yes good idea. I've added a note to that effect. Moving forward it would be nice to have the unit tests work off a smaller chunk of data. But it's also been very helpful for us to have test data that is "real". > Thanks again for the documentation you guys have put together! You are welcome! Thanks for taking a walk through them and kicking the tires. I'd be interested to hear what you are planning on doing with the software and/or data. //Ed |
