Unfortunately I have not been following the discussion too closely... I believe the libtool problem is only an issue for builds from cvs. Release builds have the all the scripts already prepared. Hence libtool, automake, autoconf are not involved. Geoff, the prerelease tarball from a few months back, can you build that on your system without intervention? It works on my system atleast.
