I know you don't use Fedora, but this link might help setting up permissions to use the rtc and other things.  I do most of this stuff on my Fedora 14 setup.

You might also try these (or something like them) first to see if you can get it working before setting up the login files.   this might enable the rtc for you and set it to a better frequency for audio work. As root...

chmod 660 /dev/rtc0
chgrp audio /dev/rtc0
echo 2048 >/sys/class/rtc/rtc0/max_user_freq
echo 2048 >/proc/sys/dev/hpet/max-user-freq
cat /sys/class/rtc/rtc0/max_user_freq
cat /proc/sys/dev/hpet/max-user-freq
