portaudio compiles with some ALSA capability. (scroll down a bit it
will tell you).
i'm using it for windows right now, taking little tutorials. would be
a nice project to get into!!

  Portaudio... I believe that is what audacity uses, I really like how it can find sound cards so directly, to the point.  I have been using Alsa modular synth to capture audio,  then export the wav to LMMS.  The nice thing about Ams as a capture device is that you can build it like an effects processor or pre-amp for vocals or guitar, whatever.  It sounds very good and is easy on the cpu. 
  I wish I could open up AMS inside of LMMS as a plug in, for audio capture and the modular synth.   These are my two favorite programs.
