First of all, you'd better use the Debian package.

If you choose the Realmagic, it tells you that you don't require a kernel  
module. Hence lirc_serial is not being compiled and you won't see anything  
about setserial.

lircd will talk to the Realmagic using the kernel serial port driver. All  
you have to do is to install lirc and start lircd and irw.
