Hi David, Run "mode2". Then press buttons, Now press a button on the remote, and you should see "pulse #" "space #" messages come from the mode2 program. After this is working, you need to run "lircd" as root. It runs as a daemon in the background. After this is loaded, then you can run irrecord(don't use the -d option), or setup a premade lircd.conf file. To test the lircd.conf file run "irw". hope that helps, Karl.
