sorry to respond to myself but... first of all, i made (at least) one mistake in my confusion. i'd compiled lircd to work with the silitek so i could test recording and forgot to recompile for home brew serial transmitter to send. i did that (after installing kernel source) and was left with a new version of the binaries and modules. i setup modules.conf and ld.so.conf and ran ldconfig, changed permissions for /dev/lirc (although i am testing this as root anyway), and checked i was using the right port and irq. as i want to control the pace digibox, i've copied the file DIGIBOX from the pace directory of the remotes to /usr/local/etc/lircd.conf i run lircd and the daemon starts. now, to send a code, i type (in the format: DIRECTIVE, REMOTE, CODE) rc SEND_ONCE SkyDigital power and nothing seems to happen. if i repeat the command, i get: rc: could not connect to socket rc: Connection refused and when i ps -A i see that lircd has gone. Any advice will be gratefully accepted.
