I’m the port maintainer for Lirc on MacPorts.  Over the years, I’ve had essentially zero feedback that anyone is installing Lirc via MacPorts.  I use it myself with an old HDHomerun Dual box that receives IR signals and forwards them over UDP (for my MythTV setup).  Been using Lirc this way for almost 10 years.

If you still want to pursue this project, we could attempt to update the MacPorts version of Lirc to something current.  Let me know.
