After putting together the radio shack based IR receiver I just couldn't get
it to work with my PC, neither on Windows nor Linux. I spent quite some
time trying to figure out what was wrong (in the process I did a better job
of the power supply - using a 5.1v zener). The hardware was evidently
working - the voltage at pin 3 of the IR receiver dipped when I clicked the
Then I saw the light. About a year back, when I upgraded my motherboard, I
held on to the "old" serial cable/connector. That's a no-no. Apparently,
each serial connector is (potentially) customized for the MB despite the
same plugs at both ends. That seems kind of obvious now but I didn't pay
that much attention. Once I fixed that, LIRC worked like a charm.
So, if you're faced with a situation where you're near your wit's end, give
this a thought.
