Sorry to keep filling up the list. Thanks to Eric Jorgensen I've
got my hauppauge dongle working with the hauppauge remote. Now,
I'd like to make it work with my Sony TV remote or my RCA universal
remote. Both previously worked nicely with a configuration file
generated from an Irman config file. That old configuration file
does not work with lircd now that I'm using the hauppauge dongle
instead. Also, when I try to run irrecord, it errors out with a
"irrecord: gap not found, can't continue"
irrecord happily reproduces the standard hauppauge config file.
I've also tried irrecord with the --force flag and got the same
Is there some reason why the hauppauge dongle will only work with
a hauppauge remote? Is there some way other than irrecord to
generate a config file that will work with a given remote? Do I
need to go back to the Irman?

The Hauppauge card has a microcontroller IC onboard that decodes the
infrared signals. The Hauppauge remote control uses the RC5 protocol.
Maybe other RC5 remotes (mainly Philips and Marantz use this protocol)
will work too. It's very unlikely that your other remotes will work with
the TV card.
