Trying to bring up a homebrew receiver.  The hardware appears to be 
working properly.  The software loads without errors or warnings.  Yet 
testing with mode2 shows nothing happening.  I've hit a wall on this.  
How do I go about troubleshooting this thing?

OS is PClinuxOS minime 0.93.  lircd version is "lircd 0.8.1-CVS".

The sequence for loading the software is

   modprobe lirc_dev
   ln -s /dev/lirc/0 /dev/lirc0
   setserial /dev/ttyS0 uart none
   modprobe lirc_serial irq=4 io=0x3f8
   lircd -d /dev/lirc0 /etc/lircd.conf --nodaemon

followed by

  mode2  -d /dev/lirc0

in a different window.

Suggestions?  Anybody?  Please?
