We plan to use lirc in order to control Mplayer from a remote control. As we
have never used lirc before, several questions arise.
First, at lirc site there is a list of supported receivers / remote
controls. Would a combination of a Vivanco remote control + Logitech/AST
receiver work ok ?
Also, we do not know wich Logitech infrared receivers are based in
Logitech/AST circuitry. We have the Logitech infrared receivers that come
with their mouses and keyboards, are those AST based ? Posted the pics here -

Third question, it seems like some software comes with lirc support. Anyhow,
I wonder if when a browser window is on focus, it would trap remote control
I would appreciate any help.

lirc doesn't care about window focus, it is completly independent of
the window system, apart from irxevent of course.
You will have to configure multiple modes in .lircrc file to get some
kind of focus behabiour, otherwise all aplication will get all events.
