Any experienses how long RS-232 cable can be used with LIRC. How about cable
length between infrared receiver and rest of the electronic.

I've used over 50 feet without any obvious degradation. That was with a
cat5 cable (26 gauge conductors?) and RJ45 adapters at each end, also
feeding the infared dongle +12V power from the PC on one of the cat5 wire=
(it had a transmitter on board too. I used this to feed a local 7805
regulator at the dongle).
If you do go the cat5 route, try to have each signal line matched with a
ground wire in the same twisted pair to cut down on noise pickup.
