You shouldn't need to configure lirc itself, since the driver in kernel 3.0 should be usable directly as an input device.

The ps -ef | grep lirc you did doesn't show the lircd daemon running, just the grep you were using to find the former one. So I guess you didn't get the lirc userspace properly activated anyway.
