I am now even more confused! I've never heard of UIR mode. I will try what you suggest, you should know how it works, after all.

I thought the config file for the mce remote would also require you to use the associated mce receiver, which I don't have.

I'm at work at the moment, I have ssh access to my box, so I can try different config files, but I have difficulty pressing remote buttons from here to test if it works!

I could mail my gf at home to try pressing some buttons.

The suggestion is:
Use the --force option or just use the existing config file for your
remote from lirc.org.
You probably used the USB-UIRT in UIR mode which requires a different
type of config file.
A MCE remote is nothing I would call random:
