What’s Linuz?

That is a good question, first of all not confuse it with zLinux, the Linux version running in the IBM Mainframes, which in some way it could be considered the other way around regarding the essence of this project.
Linuz aims to create a new flavour of the current Fedora Linux OS, basing all in the Linux Kernel, rpm packaging, GNU packages, etc… But with a differentiating aspect, include a similar Interface, security and functionalities that you would find in the current IBM Mainframes running zOS.

Linuz

Why Linuz?

Most of you will admit Mainframes host the most reliable systems. One of the reasons for that reliability is the way the users and administrators are able to interact with the system, the procedures they are following, their own experience and the tools available for that, it is not just the zOS hardware and kernel design which is already reliable. Then why we do not to use the Community to put in place exactly the same ideas, but with the tools, capabilities and systems available for us from the Open Source world.

Features

  • (Planned) Dataset management system with same characteristics as Mainframe Access Methods. MFAMX
  • (In development) ISPF interface simulation, including flexibility to add new menus
  • (Planned) RACF security model within ISPF interface
  • (In development) JCL Job Batch & REXX scripts interfaces and interoperability with the Linux system

Requirements

  • Open Source GPL License
  • System based in an existing stable Linux distribution like Fedora/Red Hat
