what change? this doesn't make sense.... if it's just in openums, the $dbh
is global:

    my $dbh = &get_dbh();
      my $recorder = new Voicemail::RecordMessage($ctport,$dbh);
        &vmta2($dbh,$msg_id,$ctport,$log);
      my $UserMenu = new Voicemail::UserMenu($ctport,$dbh);
      my $aa =  new Voicemail::AutoAttendantCT($ctport,$dbh) ;
    $dbh->disconnect();

if u wanna make a sub in common.pl or something and use, then just pass it
to the sub as the first argument....

sub use_it {
  my $dbh = shift ;
  my $sql = "select *....." ;
  my $sth = $dbh->prepare($sql);
  .... etc ...

}

call it like this from openums:

&use_it ($dbh) ;
