It was/is working on my 18+ month old buildroot based environment.

It wouldn't work on a newer one. As it turned out part of the issue may
have been a) subversion didn't really handle the update after 18 months
and b) there were some pretty fundamental bugs in BR on SH4 anyway.

I've now managed to locate patches to get BR to build. If I get a
clearer picture of what is wrong, I'll let you know :)
