Hi Peter,
    There is a 'BIGMEM' option when you build the Linux kernel. It can 
take you beyond the 2GB limit pretty easily. 5 years ago folks were 
doing 3-4GB in Linux boxes. I don;t know where they are today.

    However, any machine's ability to use this is (I think) somewhat 
dependent on the motherboard chipset the machine is built around and the 
type of memory technology it uses. Still most economical machines only 
have 3 memory slots so 3GB might be the practical limit right now, but 
if you bought a server type machine you could almost certainly go higher 
as some of them offer more memory slots.

    I can do some research on what the limits are these days if the info 
is of a time sensitive nature to you. (I.e. - you're buying a new machine.)
