Yes, that's the price we have to pay but crashing is not an option. Even when only the sampler module goes down it will still break your work. I prefer achieving rock solid 2.1 msec latency with the sampler than having the soundserver not crashing in the case of a plugin failure in exchange of giving up precious msecs of real time response. But given that the programming model for in-process and out-of-process is the same, you can just compile the version you like better. (as said the fewer processes that run the bigger the chance that there will not be problems during high load situations).
