Beagleboard-xm is a board built on TI DM3730. The most prominent feature is a DSP within it. I think it is a good platform for building an OCR gadget. I'm on the project now. I will post my codes as they are ready, one by one.
The official kernel of Linux supports Beagleboard as of version 3.8.6. I made a few modifications for it to support Beagleboard-xm.
