Kali Linux Overview

Kali Linux is an advanced Penetration Testing and Security Auditing Linux distribution. Kali is a complete re-build of [Backtrack] Linux, adhering completely to Debian development standards.

Images Overview

The BASIC image provides Kali Linux and a LXDE desktop; the Kali security tools are not installed. The full tool-set increases the size of the image beyond the maximum file size for the standard FAT32 format of most SD cards, 4.3 GB. Individual tools can be installed from the commandline using apt-get.

The FULL image provides Kali Linux, a LXDE desktop, and the full suite of Kali tools. This image is a rather hefty 8.3 GB and consequently not compatible with FAT32. Ext4 and exFAT are the recommended external SD card filesystems. Note: MySQL Server 5.5 is not installed due to errors configuring the package after installation.

How images are created

Kali was built using debootrap and qemu, like the other Debian-based distributions.
