I gave Linux on Android (with Ubuntu 12.04 Full) a try and -> the Installer, downloaded from SourceForge, is totally borked.
The "Update Scripts" fails because the destination directory in /data/data doesn't exist (see below).
Upon "Launch" it tries to call the bootscript.sh from /data/data/com.zpwebsites.linuxonandroid/files which DOES NOT exist ... the Open Source Installer creates /data/data/zpwebsites.linuxonandroid.opensource (temp workaround was to ln -s /data/data/com.zpwebsites.linuxonandroid.opensource /data/data/com.zpwebsites.linuxonandroid to make it work for the time being)
Upon "exit" (from the 'booted' chroot) it throws an umount error at /data/local/mnt (I have the "ubuntu" directory sitting on /mnt/external_sd/ubuntu).
You guys should clearly check your app and scripts; the OSS Installer is clearly using paths only valid in the Donate version.
Also, another oddity: While VNC ON Android worked fine it didn't work when I tried to connect from my Linux machine. It asks for authentication but then says "authentication failure" (Linux Mint 13 with the default Vinagre "Remote Desktop Viewer") - the idea was to access from the Linux Machine with a higher display resolution (like 1680x1050) for the VNC session (at 800x480 it's a slight pain in the rear to do something ON Android).
In the same go I can report that it works on a RK2918 tablet (nextbook Premium 7SE - Cortex A8 1GHz, 512MB RAM, ICS 4.0.3, Kernel 3.0.8+, Ubuntu residing on a 32GB Class 10 Samsung mSD).
Otherwise keep it up ... the Installer is quite comfortable once it actually works.

If you would like to refer to this comment somewhere else in this project, copy and paste the following link:
Yes thank you for this, I am aware of the first three issues and hope to find time today or tomorrow to fix this and update the git/apk yes it is still using the same paths are the play store version of the app, this was an over site on our part. Of cause if anyone else wants to fix these errors feel free to push them to the git.
It should work from another device, so long as that device is on the same network and you use your phones IP address and then the normal port and password.
