Hello,
I'm looking already for such a possibility (linux boot from USB stick) for 4 weeks now.
I find your project very interesting.
Could you please share your results also in english?
Regards Erik

Hi Erik:
We are looking for translators for our web page and documents. The project is very young. The first version, 1.0, it's quite simple, but we are working in the new version with full documentation and totally operative.
If you know somebody interested in the translations would be very helpful for the project.
Best regards, Javi Roman

Hello Javier,
thank you for your fast response and the fast translation of the homepage.
I don't know if I'm the right person for translation because I'm a native german speaker.
What I can do for you is share my results in getting work this USB device with my PC.
I try to use a 32 MB EasyDisk memory stick (0x0c76/0x005/0x100) on a Pentium I machine under kernel 2.2.19-2.2.22. I know there is a statement usb-storage is not working under 2.2. kernel, but I believe it cn't be so difficult to get it work because other flash medias do work (cameras, flash card readers, etc.). I only miss the final stage where the USB stick is recognized as a SCSI device.
So I'm currently investigate what informations are passed to the SCSI subsystem that the device will get an entry under /proc/scsi/scsi.
Best regards,
Erik

I understand that you want patch 2.2.19 kernel ourself (write the source code) to learn USB technologie. 2.2.20 kernel work fine with USB hard drive so you can use diff utility to look changes or look at the pach in kernel.org. Also the following Linux Journal article can be helpfull: http://www.linuxjournal.com/article.php?sid=4786
Please talk me about tour progresses.
Best regards, Javi Roman.

Hello Javi,
I stopped my work on USB mass storage and kernel 2.2.xx. It finally ended up in debugging the SCSI subsystem.
I've decided to use Compact Flash cards with adapter or Disk On Module for booting. The advantage is that these devices will be recognized by every BIOS because the IDE interface. I need to open the PC anyway to install a second NIC or ISDN controller (use PC as router) so this it not a problem for me. It boots in less then 30 seconds (fasther then CISCO router).
I found an interessing hint about SPB-Linux in another message of this forum. I will try this one. But the main problem is the BIOS. If the BIOS doesn't have USB boot support you need a floppy disk first.:-(
Best regards,
Erik
