I already have a very nice firewall with a very secure customized setup that I'd like to continue to use, but I'm very interested in also having a LinuxMCE setup in my home. For MCE's dhcp-serving needs, would it be sufficient to just use the MCE Core as a syslog-ng log collector for my router, and have all the firewall's dhcpd messages be sent to the Core for logfile parsing there, or do you actually have a modified dhcpd that you use for device configuration? |

I have the same "problem"...
I already have firewall/dhcp, mysql, and asterisk running that I
want to continue using. I am planning to set up linuxmce on it's
own physical dmz to prevent it from interferring with the rest
of my computers, especially dhcp...
Mysql bugs me a bit since I dont want to run a heavy server
program on a htpc when I already have a really nice hardware
setup for mysql. It would really nice to use that db server
instead, I guess that it would also provide better performance.
Being able to tweak those things is more or less the only thing
that I think LinuxMCE prevents me from doing...

guys... why do some of you try to make this stuff 50,000 times harder than it ever should be? why don't you make the asterisk, mysql, dhcp/firewall servers you're using, the CORE.. install a core only installation on that machine....and use media directors where you want the HTPC functionality? -Thom On Nov 9, 2007 12:53 PM, Peter =D6sterberg <pe...@su...> wrote: > > I have the same "problem"... > > > I already have firewall/dhcp, mysql, and asterisk running that I want to > continue using. I love seeing people post to this list, it gets me excited that LinuxMCE is growing. I'm really looking forward to getting some time to set LinuxMCE up (hopefully in the near future). I was just curious what those of you who have it up and running think about it so far. Any and all feedback is appreciated!! Well, mainly because I have already setup those and they are running and working fully configured. Installing it in LinuxMCE would force me to move all my existing databases, change all running applications so that they use the "new" syql server isntead. Same thing with Asterisk, change config in all phones, reconfigure all asterisk tweaks... And, as said, mysql server has tweaked hardware for that and I dont want to have TV-cards in that machine... Separation can be a good thing ;o) On Fri, 2007-11-09 at 12:57 -0500, Thom Cherryhomes wrote: > guys... > > why do some of you try to make this stuff 50,000 times harder than it > ever should be? > > why don't you make the asterisk, mysql, dhcp/firewall servers you're > using, the CORE.. install a core only installation on that > machine....and use media directors where you want the HTPC > functionality? > > -Thom > > > On Nov 9, 2007 12:53 PM, Peter Österberg <pe...@su...> wrote: > > > > I have the same "problem"... > > > > > > I already have firewall/dhcp, mysql, and asterisk running that I want to > > continue using. For my case, the router is a Geode/233 MHz with 128MB RAM and 256MB "hard drive." It's very low-power (4W wall-wart IIRC), and it and my cable modem can run for many hours on their UPS. The description of the Core software makes it pretty clear that my firewall would be a tad underpowered for that purpose. I have an NFSv4 and Samba enabled file server, with about 1TB of storage in hardware raid, with a ~1300 MHz processor and a good chunk of RAM. The slow processor there makes me think Core wouldn't be too happy with that machine. I'm also planning on re-building that machine to Solaris 10 soon, and I'm guessing that LinuxMCE doesn't run on Solaris. The machine I'd like to run the Core on would by my gf's development machine, which is a Core Duo (4600?) with gigE, lots of memory, and a small-ish hard drive. All files would be stored on the file server, so that shouldn't be an issue, but the dev server does not serve dhcp; it has to reboot sometimes, and I just really like having my firewall do dhcp. So... Is there a way to have my firewall send its dhcpd logs to the Core software so that it thinks it has a dhcpd server running, or do you run a modified dhcpd that communicates directly with the Core software? |

I can just say, some ppl need to go an other road and needs flexibility. I don't mind a prepacked solution but I don't like to be forced using all of it. Would be nice to ba able to turn things on and of and be able to tell LinuxMCE where to find the services when they aren't run on the core. I feel that the only way for me to go to be able to use LinuxMCE is to put it on it's own DMZ. It can play it's network circus there and the rest of my machines won't be bothered about it. LinuxMCE is THE media center but it, sadly, sucks when it comes to flexibility.
