I thought some of the user might find this interesting: http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/10.11/power_houses.html. It's about how the rich build high tech homes and how to build something similar for ~$20,000. -- Linux Home Automation Neil Cherry nc...@co... http://mywebpages.comcast.net/ncherry/ (Text only) http://linuxha.sourceforge.net/ (SourceForge) http://hcs.sourceforge.net/ (HCS II) |

Hi, I'm willing to interface a Gemini 9600 or 3200 alarm control panel (are they in fact the same regarding RS-232 interfacing?) to a Linux / MacOS X software interface that would allow me to remotely login and monitor everything. Searching the archives, I found that there have been some work done to interface that kind of stuff. I found a spec on the communication protocol used by those panels at http://www.cc-concepts.com/opensource/napco/ Unfortunately, there is nothing on the commands the unit accepts and sends. I see that it is in the supported devices of the LinuxHA project but I can't find anything more specific. Does anyone here have any info, links or software example that could be helpfull to interface this device? Thanks, Nicolas Dube |

Things are coming along. Better than expected considering that what I want to accomplish (mains powered, always communicating) is contrary to a design goal (low power) of the PV. I threw together a web page with a picture and the .bin file. http://www.projectplasma.com/PVpad/ The source is not worth looking at, it's just basic UI code that I'm using as a design tool (UI development) and has little bering on the final form. Anybody who can bootstrap the develpment environment can replicate it. John |

I'm really sorry about the SPAM (no I didn't send it), I've removed the list from the public list list and I've required that posting can be done only by registered members (I though I'd done that before?). I'm hoping to have some actual code and hardware to post in the next few months. It will be inexpensive boards that can be connected to an RS232 port (via an RS485 converter). More details to follow. -- Linux Home Automation Neil Cherry nc...@co... http://mywebpages.comcast.net/ncherry/ (Text only) http://linuxha.sourceforge.net/ (SourceForge) http://hcs.sourceforge.net/ (HCS II) |

I think that's more hassle than its worth... OTOH, the microprocessor is a NEC V30 derivative, so perhaps one of the micro-*nix's can be installed. My nit is that I don't (yet) see a way to autolaunch an app at power-on. OTOH, my pipe-dream is that with the application I have in mind, I could create enough of a market that a custom batch could be built specifically for home automation command & control: - multidrop serial (rs485, etc.) - custom start up - j-box mountable form factor and packaging - different startup contrast - external power At a minimum. The default backlight timeout is a joke, but it seems that it can be overridden by a running application. (The e-book reader does this). > Well I opened it but you'd have to be very good with fine pitch pins to > do it. Well, if you wanted to do 802.11b, you'd probably wind up spending the diff between the cost of this device and a cheap WinCE with a CF wireless nic. OTOH, somewhere on the webring, somebody built an IR emitter that plugged into the serial cable. John |

This is targeted towards the North American market. Their schtick is cheap and "disposable" as opposed to some models that challenge a desktop in price. The unit is a little larger than I had hoped and would probably require a custom mounting. The contrast can be adjusted so that regulation switch height mounting is readable. The pixels are monochrome (on or off, no gray). The EL backlight is quite bright. The Sx00Plus models seem to have a slightly different SDK that the one I pointed out yesterday. It can be found here: http://www.casio.com/pvdownload/ There are a handful of user sites out there, mostly EU centric, so discussions tend to center around the Sx60 products. Webring: http://www.pvweb.net Semi-official site? http://www.pocket-viewer.com (forums require cookies.) |

The Casio site has the PV-S450 (for example; I took a shot at the 'x' in your post :-) as "This product is Archived", while if you go to the Personal PCs->Pocket Viewers page, it lists the PV-S200e, PV-S250, PV-S400Plus, and PV-S600Plus in a way that implies they are all current products. Howdy ho. Was spelunking Target the other night for ??? and so as not to be a complete waste of time I decided to browse a bit. In the not-quite-PDA section I came across Cassio's Pocket Viewer line. $40-50, Backlit, touchscreen, 160x160 (monochrome) pixel display with RS-232. And a website for an SDK. The only downer is that there doesn't seem to be an external power connector (Duh, that's why they call it "Pocket"...) Thanks to the magic of the Game Boy, the world is full of 3V power adapters... I think I found my missing link: a cheap graphical smart switch. John |

Hi ho. FWIW, I found a place[1] that sells cf2ide adapters via a secure shopping site. I bought two at ~$20ea + 4.50 UPS ground. The shipping cost was the same for 1 or 2 adapters and might be true for a few more. CompactFlash offers a solid-state IDE(ish) interface that, given a passive adapter, you could boot PC hardware from. Coupled with a LEAF (http://leaf.sf.net) distribution and some low power components one could build a variety of fanless "appliances" (routers, HomeAuto, X-term, LTSP client, etc.). I've liked the LEAF concept for a long time. Minimal Debian derivation, secure by default (it's got a firewall focus). Wicked fast boot (10s). I'm going to update my cf2ide pages[2] in a day or so to be more of a "why" resource more than a "how" :) John [1] http://www.acscontrol.com [2] http://www.projectplasma.com/cf2ide |

Boo.... Figured I'd help Tom out -lee ----- Forwarded message from Tom Witmer <myc...@my...> ----- Date: 15 Jun 2002 22:29:44 -0600 From: Tom Witmer <myc...@my...> Reply-To: cp...@li... Subject: [AppDig]ANN: Javacelot, Java utilities for Ocelot v0.5 To: cp...@li... I posted this to comp.home.automation, but it probably belongs here too. Hi All! After struggling with not making my own automated home complicated enough, I went ahead and wrote a GPL'd Java toolkit ("Javacelot") for communicating with the Ocelot. It uses the RXTX utilities for the serial port communications, which left me the comparatively easy task of coding up the protocol into a friendly API. It's intended to be used in a heavily multithreaded environment (such as a webserver), but you don't need to add any threading to your own apps to use it. Version 0.5 is the first release of Javacelot, which is minimally complete, but not thoroughly tested. I'm fairly confident of its ability to send X10 commands, manipulate Ocelot variables, collect version information and so on, but a few protocol areas are still a bit fuzzy to me, and untestable (by me) without purchasing additional modules. Also, the API I've written could use some serious cleaning up and expanding, but that will happen as it gets closer to a 1.0 release. There's much more work for me to do on it, but my hands are tired from a week's worth of designing, editing, and documenting, so you'll have to browse the documentation if you want to learn more. Unless it's in one of the bits of documentation I haven't written yet, in which case send me a complaint so I know what to focus on! :-) But there are a few example programs bundled in there to get you started if you're not into that whole "reading instructions" thing. Yes, this project will eventually support the CM11a as well, but that isn't as "interesting" to me right now, so it'll have to wait until I'm happier with the Ocelot-specific code. Happy automating! Unfortunately, its licensing is not one of them if one is writing commercial software. If wx does what I want "for free" why should I tie myself to Qt? Regardless, last I heard, somebody was working on a Qt target for Wx. John |
