I believe the Linux 2.4 Input subsystem has support for microphones.  Scour
the web for docs (unfortunately there aren't a lot in the kernel tree) and
start reading linux/include/linux/input.h.

If it can be done as a Input microphone, I think that would be the
easiest/coolest.

It's Google time :P.

I've been thinking about getting a karaoke device - to determine how the
expansion port passthrough mechanism works.  It may also be some sort of
input device (as well as output), who knows?
