While going through the IRC chats from June, I came across someone else 
having this issue.  The solution is as follows:

Very brief instructions taken from Tools:

1) untar gcc
2) patch
3) mkdir build-gcc
4) at the: ../gcc-2.../configure part, append --disable-shared after 
--with-newlib
I got it to compile with this fix.
