Regarding RPM errors

Hi all,
  I installed 2.6.9-ruby on RH 9.0. Everything is working including
sound. But no mic. I can't record anything from my mic. Any one
succeeded in recording with ruby kernel. Also when i am using alsa
derivers, i can get only two spkrs working(I am currently running four
terminals) . 
Also when i am trying to install something, the rpm db makes the
following error massages:

rpmdb: unable to join the environment
error: db4 error(11) from dbenv->open: Resource temporarily unavailable
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Resource temporarily
unavailable (11)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm


Wat may b the problem?.
