    did you perform the compilation of nvidia's modules after having
    perfomed the make module_install of the kernel 2.4.26 and WHILE
    the 2.4.26 kernel was running ?
    nvidia's detection of current kernel header is a little bit demanding !

    I always boot the new kernel in single user once, there I build the
    nvidia modules, and then the following reboot is ok...
