good -- i'm glad you are using the new console work. i have been 
updating the ruby docs (especially the quickstart) and i would like to 
add your comments into what's there.

i see you're patching against 2.4.19. maybe that is why you can't use 
fbdev. do you know if 2.5.x with ruby works for this?

looks like under X you disabled some PCI interaction. what kind of patch 
would the XFree people want to roll in? would we have an XF86Config 
option for leaving out those operations?

i hope things settle down enough to use fbdev with independent multihead 
before too long. i'd be happy with kernel 2.4.x or 2.5.x. we've talked 
about it before... kiosks and public terminals would be an immediate 
win. it would help on hardware costs, but eventually it could help to 
cut maintenance costs too.
