make xconfig problem

Anyone here a kernel configure expert. I just tested out the ruby tree
with make config, make menuconfig, and make xconfig. The first two worked
but make xconfig failed with 

[jsimmons@maxwell linux]$ make xconfig

Does anyone know a solution to this?

Q: Why did they deprecate a.out support in linux?
