Hello,
We would like to announce the availability of our new xephyr-based
multi-user public access computing live demo disc and Ubuntu multi-user
packages.
We've started a multi-user wiki at:
http://www.groovix.com/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/SlimHelp
We refer to multi-user computing as SLIM: Simultaneous Local Independent
Multi-user, so make it easly distinguishable in web searches and for
marketing purposes. SLIM in Xephyr we call SLIMIX
Now using xephyr, you can have two distinct screens per card (probably 3
with tv-out). Our scripts currently will only work with nvidia cards, but
it could be easily extended to other brands. We have not been able to use
more than one ATI card in a system without things crashing, so with ATI you
are limited to one card supporting two users max. NOTE with xephyr, trying
to run 3D apps may destroy the X session, so disable 3D screensavers.
You can grab our new public access multi-user live demo disc .iso at:
http://www.groovix.com/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/KioskDemoDisc
This version uses Xephyr, so no 3D, but up to 10 users -- just plug
everything in and boot.
For assigning kb/mouse pairs to the correct screen, use ctrl-alt-k: see
http://www.groovix.com/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/SlimixInstall
For those not using an apt based packaging system, you can get our .deb
files directly and try converting to rpm:
http://www.groovix.com/ubuntu/pool/multiuser/
We would like to offer rpms, but don't have the demand or resources to test,
so any rpm contributions would be great.
I want to explicitly thank:
Ludovic Pollet for sessiond, enabling easy multi-user sound
Ander Conselvan de Oliveira for patching xephyr to allow separate keyboard
and mice
Aivils Stoss for all his multi-user work, specifically on the evdev kb/mouse
method
Lonni Friedman of nvidia for fixing nvidia multi-user issues at our specific
request
And the rest of this mailing list for all the contributions, help, and
testing.
Thank You,
Michael Pardee
