Likewise! We also intend to advance Ruby commercially. See: www.regobot.co.il (English translation hopefully to be completed over the next few days). In all earnest, Shaul, my sidekick and myself have busied ourselves mostly with matters external to the code itself, but we would be pleased to help in any small way we can as have the fellows (ladies?) at Groovix. Our warmest pat on the back to James Simmons, Aivils, Svetlio and all the others who have toiled so much to bring Ruby to where it is today. The problem is that the open source model doesn't work very well. The idea of hundreds of programs working a small amount to complete a task quickly doesn't happen. What happens is two or three developers end up sending huge amounts of spare time to get it working over a very very long period of time. There is so much more that can make ruby and multidesktop linux go much further. I consider ruby very immature. The current version is no where as developed as our 2.4 tree was. Unfortunetly I don't do ruby for a living so I can't back port the improvements to the 2.6 tree in the near future. I have talks with the X guys about the next generation of X servers and ruby. Its sad but to get where we want will take over 5 years. You can see that with DRI since it ends up support hardware a year more after it comes out. They to are volunters who earn nothing in return. We could get there faster if we had $$$ resources so the key developers could work on the next generation of software. I just don't have the capital to do this and VCs in the US don't like to invest anymore unless you can make profits in one month. So if companies want to use our product that is fine. All we like is to be hired in return :-) |
