I did some testing today. I tried out libsvga 1.4.1. It works great under
2.2.X. Under 2.4.X it chokes about a mmap problem. I have seen this
reported before. Is their a patch for it? The next thing I tried was
libgii. It also worked find for the keyboard ioctl I could trace. So I
don't know yet what the problem is. 

Q: Why did they deprecate a.out support in linux?
A: Because a nasty coff is bad for your elf.

Svgalib background execution support depended on being able to mmap
/self/proc/mem, which is notpossible since linux-2.3.27. The solution is
to compile svgalib without background support. To do that get source
distribution of svgalib, edit Makefile.cfg to comment out the line
BACKGROUD = Y, and then recompile and reinstall svgalib.
