As I promised a while back, I finally ran some tests using a dual pci-e system. Video runs fine on either pci-e card with low xorg cpu usage. But, on a third pci card, you can clearly see the slowdown. I will try to ask nVidia what is going on. As Jean-Daniel's pci is fine using xf86 instead of xorg, I will try to dig up one of our old debian installs and see if this problem is xorg specific. It may even be xorg 6.9/7 that the problem first appeared in. The Makefile for sessiond.c and the udev files change for Debian. Also you need to install all 3 fuse debs. The obvious thing I ought to do is create a .deb. I am having no luck using NAS with this scheme. Hello, In fact, /var/sessions/currents/current is a link to /var/sessions/curren= ts/:0=20 for session 0, /var/sessions/currents/:1 for session 1, and so on... sessiond is handling this; it is a fuse filesystem, so it can look into t= he=20 calling process environment variable to when the link should point to :0=20 (depending on the DISPLAY variable)... But links in /var/sessions/currents/:0 and /var/sessions/currents/:1 stil= l=20 have to be created manually (or by hotplug script for the enthusiasts...) Hope it helps... Hi, I have a sessiond question: In the README it says: ... * In /dev, you must create symbolic links to /var/sessions/currents/current/[dsp|adsp|...] Make sure that udev will not create /dev/dsp by itself, or erase it at next boot. (see provided /etc/udev/... for hints) ... So /dev/dsp is a symbolic link to /var/sessions/currents/current/dsp. Then who creates /var/sessions/currents/current/dsp, and how? Thanks! Hello, We would like to announce the availability of our new xephyr-based multi-user public access computing live demo disc and Ubuntu multi-user packages. We've started a multi-user wiki at: http://www.groovix.com/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/SlimHelp We refer to multi-user computing as SLIM: Simultaneous Local Independent Multi-user, so make it easly distinguishable in web searches and for marketing purposes. SLIM in Xephyr we call SLIMIX Now using xephyr, you can have two distinct screens per card (probably 3 with tv-out). Our scripts currently will only work with nvidia cards, but it could be easily extended to other brands. We have not been able to use more than one ATI card in a system without things crashing, so with ATI you are limited to one card supporting two users max. NOTE with xephyr, trying to run 3D apps may destroy the X session, so disable 3D screensavers. You can grab our new public access multi-user live demo disc .iso at: http://www.groovix.com/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/KioskDemoDisc This version uses Xephyr, so no 3D, but up to 10 users -- just plug everything in and boot. For assigning kb/mouse pairs to the correct screen, use ctrl-alt-k: see http://www.groovix.com/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/SlimixInstall For those not using an apt based packaging system, you can get our .deb files directly and try converting to rpm: http://www.groovix.com/ubuntu/pool/multiuser/ We would like to offer rpms, but don't have the demand or resources to test, so any rpm contributions would be great. I want to explicitly thank: Ludovic Pollet for sessiond, enabling easy multi-user sound Ander Conselvan de Oliveira for patching xephyr to allow separate keyboard and mice Aivils Stoss for all his multi-user work, specifically on the evdev kb/mouse method Lonni Friedman of nvidia for fixing nvidia multi-user issues at our specific request And the rest of this mailing list for all the contributions, help, and testing. Thank You, Michael Pardee Open Sense Solutions LLC http://open-sense.com 888-323-1742 920-494-3222 |

Dear friends: I created multiheads with the slackware today. At the time when I came to know from my friend Zoli's post that it does not need faketty with xorg7 (kudos to xorg consortium), I came to know that the latest slack distribution 6.9 also has the same features. In the meantime, Mr. Mikhail Kshevetskiy's configuration files enlightened me a lot. And thanks to Tiago Vignatti of c3sl for his offer to help, but I created one on my own though very much confused with the Sys V init scripts. However, there are a few things to be solved. When I used differnt drivers for differnt cards, the second display did not work, even if the drivers are correct (ati and s3). Therfore I changed both to the ati based cards and it worked flawlessly. Second, the display resolution in the second terminal is much lower than the first one though both of them has the same configurations!? Third, I could not switch to the Swedish keyboard even after I specified se as the xkblayout. setxkblayout se in command line gives the following error> $ setxkbmap se Couldn't interpret _XKB_RULES_NAMES property Use defaults: rules - 'xorg' model - 'pc101' layout - 'us' Segmentation fault I am attaching my xorg.conf and gdm.conf files below for those who may be intersted and also to help diagnosethe three problems that I am facing right now. Shall be obliged if anyone could throw more light on it. Thanks in advance! May you, your family, your team be successful in your missions, prosperous, healthy, happy, free from suffering and in peace always! Hi, Does anybody know whether it is possible now to run multiple users on a dual port (single chip) graphics board? Is Xephyr still the only solution? I had hoped that Xorg wold provide that capability at some point. If anybody has any information on the subject, please inform us all. Yitzhak |

Dear friends: I am posting to this mailing list after a long time due to unavoidable circumstances. I am trying to create multiheads on a slack-based ZenWalk machine. I tried to follow the c3sl hack with Xephyr, but it crashes with 'no screen found' message when X server is booting and hangs. I came across the faketty, Xnest and Xephyr than the Ruby kernel patch method. Also came across userful stuff, but do not want to use because it is proprietary. Could anyone suggest me which is the best way to create a multihead in slackware? Anyone has experience? Actually, I am a bit confused with slackware because the init.d in debian/RH is not there and rc.d is there and c3sl is mainly based on the debian platform. I have chosen Zenwalk.org because it seemed to run faster than anything I came across except kanotix (but it is woody based, not sarge). Suggestion solicited. May you, your family, your team be successful in your missions, prosperous, healthy, happy, free from suffering and in peace always! Hi Ludovic, Sorry for the undersight on my part, I just checked the ogle AND Xorg cpu usage: PCI: 22-26% ogle_mpeg_vs 13-16% Xorg AGP: 29-30% ogle_mpeg_vs 0-1% Xorg So indeed the performance is worse on the pci cards. I will try this on a dual pci-e system later. XV does seem to be working on both screens, but why is the player cpu usage lower but Xorg usage higher on PCI? Why would it be so much more variable on PCI? Thanks, Michael Pardee Open Sense Solutions LLC http://open-sense.com 888-323-1742 920-494-3222 > > The interresting part is cpu usage of X11 process. The interresting part is cpu usage of X11 process. In all case, with xv,=20 mplayer only has to copy data to a Xshm. It doesn't directly hit the=20 hardware... X11 then has to copy these data into the memory of the graphi= cs=20 cards and then instruct the GPU to blit/overlay it on screen... So what is X11 cpu usage in you case ? >> I'd really like to know if you have XV working on all you heads with nice cpu usage... I just played a dvd simultaneously on two screens with ogle, pretty much the same cpu usage, about 30% with an Athlon 3000+. You get a really cool echo when you hit play on both screens just out of sync. Playing them one at a time, it almost seemed the pci card (not agp) has slightly lower cpu usage. These are with nvidia cards, a 5200 agp and a 4000 pci. You should try out our old live cd (the new one uses Xephyr, so no xv) to make sure it isn't your software. The old demo is available at http://ftp.open-sense.net/badger/groovix_badger_live_20051222.iso I don't remember right now if that old demo uses nv or nvidia drivers, but it can easily be switched and gdm restarted. If you want to do a fresh Ubuntu install, just run this one command after installing Ubuntu to turn your system into a Groovix multi-user system: wget groovix.com/support/ubuntu/dapper/groovix_setup.bash -O - | bash It could be some sort of software issue, or configuration -- are you using the same user settings on both displays? Are you sure both are using XV? -- Michael Pardee Open Sense Solutions LLC http://open-sense.com 888-323-1742 920-494-3222 |

No, I have the same with mplayer and xine. XV seems to works fine on seco= nd=20 head (xvinfo), but it just uses more cpu than when the card is alone.=20 I think it could be related to DMA... I suspect the nvidia drivers to do = DMA=20 correctly only on first head and not on second... I had a look at the xv code of the mga driver (the code which send data t= o=20 video memory) : there is no dma here and it gives arround 35% cpu usage w= hen=20 playing video. Since i have the same perfs on the pci nvidia, it is possi= ble=20 that it uses the same method (copying data using cpu, without dma)... The video I used to test was a capture from dvb-t (mpeg2). So you can get= the=20 same by playing a dvb for example... I'd really like to know if you have = XV=20 working on all you heads with nice cpu usage... OK, no mixing. But which cards (two ATIs, twi nVidias or one Matrox) is the best choice for dual head systems, with use of XGL? mfg Mario Scheel -- Echte DSL-Flatrate dauerhaft für 0,- Euro*. Or maybe a mix ATI <-> nVidia, or maybe only Matrox. mixing a propietary-driven card such as nvidia (and possibly recent A= TI=20 cards ??) with another card is a little bit tricky : I once did that=20 but I had to build two separate library trees in order to get each=20 dedicated libraries matching each running instances of XFree, each tr= ee=20 with dedicated 3D libraries installed by their related drivers set. remember that after you have to rebuild all trees each time a new=20 security hole is discovered around X (not that many, lately) it's a l= ot=20 of work if you compare with having one single almost regular binary s= et=20 by using two cards sharing the same drivers. building those two trees is part of this (obsolete but full of ideas)= =20 page here : http://disjunkt.com/dualhead/ unless someone has a better idea for efficiently mixing ati and nvidi= a=20 on the same machine ? -- Jean-Daniel Pauget - http://nekodune.com/ T=E9l: +33 (0)2 33 17 20 16 2, rue Andr=E9 PELCA 50580 Denneville-Plage France |
