You have a corrupt filesystem. You may or may not be able to fix this. Enter the root password and the system will go into single user mode. From there you will want to run fschk on the problem file system (/dev/hda1). In general, if fsck suggests a corrective action, do it. At the prompt try this: fsck /dev/hda1 Also consult the man pages for fsck and e2fsck. Now as to why this happened, there are two likely reasons: 1. The hard disk has failed. 2. You did something improper like turning the machine off without shutting it down first.
