Thx, it works!
I can now create a backup (in YYYYmmdd.tar.gz format) of any directory
by
"bu SOURCE DEST"
If the DEST directory doesn't exist it will be created, if a file with
that name already exist the backup will be created as YYYYmmdd-x.tar.gz
where x is an increasing number up to 10.
I still have to edit the script, make it look a bit better and add a
warning after the last backup, possibly asking the user to "go for
another 10 attempts" or something, but I'm very happy already!
Amazing, in exactly 1 week I've gone from not knowing how to start
writing a script to a fully functional backup script!

after I've made some more changes.
