I'll really need your help here, as I've never owned
any Linux specific books.

I've you like a book about Linux (or anything else
Linux related), please post it here as a followup to
this bug. A brief description of why you like it
woud be great.

(for now, try to stay away from programming books,
shell scripting is ok, other scripting languages
probably as well. If you think a programming book
section is a good idea, by all means open another
bug)

    Review of _Essential_System_Administration_:

Ok, this is a general Unix book, rather than just a Linux book, however, I have applied *most* of the information in the book to the linux boxes I have touched, and if you decide to do something wacky like install {Free|Net|Open}BSD, you'll know what the heck you are doing when you hop on your system :)

The book is wonderful. leen Frisch is a great writer, and entertaining at times.

The book itself assumes basic knowledge of how to use a Unix system (like maneuvering in the filesystem, running programs, etc).

There is information on Unix history, and the basic philosophies of the system. After that you get into a great overview of various Unix systems (including Linux). The format is very straight forward, first the general functionality of a subsystem is explained, and then she goes indepth on the various implementations (eg, Irix, AIX, Digital Unix, Linux, Solaris, BSDi, SunOS and maybe a couple more, it has been a little while). When I say ``subsystem'', I mean things like the whole boot process, the network configuration, kernel configuration, the filesystem (layout and much much more), stuff for automation, and many other topics. The book covers a *lot* of material, and does a good job covering it.

Anyway, great book. I highly recommend it.

Jeff (who doesn't want to fsck around with ssl right now, because he is lazy and tired)

Tack that on somewhere that looks good :)

Jeff (still doesn't want to mess with SSL)
