#639 Cannot install firewire.

can't make menuconfig or get menu for 1394 install

kernel v 2.4.21-15.0.3.ELsmp ; 2.4.21-15.0.3.EL
libraw1394-0.9.0-9.i386.rpm
RedHat enterprise 3
pci controller firewire cards with ports / chipset:
Adaptec / Lucent u-electronics FW323 AND / OR
Keyspan FPCI-3N / Texas Inst. TSB12LV23
Purpose: connect LaCie 250 gb firewire hard drive
LaCie cannot support Linux. RedHat no support firewire.
In "IEEE 1394 for Linux, Getting Started, B. Installation":
since kernel is > 2.4.18+, went to (B. 7). make
menuconfig ("no rule to make target menuconfig...stop").
Cannot access "Code maturity level options " menus.
When either of the 2 pci cards are removed from the
system, upon bootup next time, kudzu gives a message
that the card has been removed and cites the chipset
manufacturer and id.
