Try the attached patch to libdv (current CVS version). 
cd libdv
patch -p1 < /path/to/dv-diff 
make stream
./stream

This should hopefully give you a nice little gtk window displaying live
video. (Yes, I know, I should make port and channel numbers an option but
I'm lazy and I only have a single IEEE1394 device... ;-) 

Gets me ~6 frames per second on a Dual PIII/450.
