WE mostly use Kino or xdvplay. You should work on compiling them. Kino
uses autotools, so it should alert you during the configure step as to
what may be missing on your system. You'll probably need all of a
gnome-dev collection of packages. I use Ximian Gnome on Debian, so I
apt-get install task-hexlix-gnome-dev (the name might include ximian
now).

Not yet. Broadcast creates MPEG2. For Kino, we're looking into
interoperability with Broadcast.
