DV -> format I can play :-)

I finally got my computer capturing DV movies using IEEE1394 and dvgrab.  
They are saved as .avi files (type 1 I believe).  I can play them back on 
windows machines, but not in linux.  My question is multi-part.

What can I use to play them in Linux?  I cannot get Kino or xdvplay to 
compile.

Is there any way to convert them to another format that I can play in linux, 
such as MPEG 1/2 or DIVX?
