WD hard drive not recognized

I'm completely new to Linux, so please bear with me. I feel like I've tried
pretty much everything to get my desktop to even recognize (let alone
mount) my WD hard drive. I've crawled every site, posted to the Ubuntu and
Linux Mint forums, followed the directions in the "My FireWire
hardisk/CD-ROM/DVD-Recorder is not recognized. Now what?" section of the
wiki... Now I turn to you for help. All the details requested are below.
Please let me know if you'd like any additional info from me. Thanks in
advance for any suggestions you might have.

Also, I'm kind of hoping it's some crazy weird problem that is
almost-but-not-quite unfixable instead of a stupidly simple thing that I've
overlooked, otherwise I'll just feel like an idiot.
